In today’s sports world, everyone tells you to “network harder,” “promote yourself,” or “play the game.”
But what if your best strength is staying true to your values?
I’ve never believed in forcing relationships or pretending to be someone I’m not.
Integrity may not always open doors fast — but it keeps them open longer.
What do you think: in a world obsessed with quick wins, does authenticity still matter?
Reflection on My Career as a Coach 🏀
Today, as I take a moment to reflect, I realize that over 20 seasons have passed in Spanish basketball. Throughout these years, I’ve had the privilege of working across almost all professional and developmental categories in the country, traveling the world, and meeting thousands of players and coaches who have all taught me valuable lessons.
Honestly, the journey has been incredible, and I’ve lived my dream, but as often happens in this profession, we always want more. That drive to keep pushing forward, improving, and reaching new goals is what keeps us motivated. However, there comes a point when you feel stuck, like your career isn’t evolving. Doubts creep in, and you start questioning if you could have done something differently.
It’s true that many coaches try to force relationships, getting close to those they see as “higher up” in the basketball world, insisting to secure a short-term opportunity. But I’ve never been one of them. It’s never been my style to chase people or force connections. I’m the type of coach who prefers relationships to grow naturally, someone who enjoys learning from everyone and contributing what I can, without pressuring anyone.
Perhaps in today’s world, that might be seen as a “flaw” — maybe my approach doesn’t align with current expectations — but it’s just who I am.
What I do know is that I’ll keep searching, keep learning, and keep giving my best in every opportunity that comes my way.
