Cheap Domestic Coach”… What Does That Even Mean?

As a coach, I’ve often heard clubs or general managers say they’re looking for a “cheap domestic coach.” And every time I hear it, I can’t help but wonder: what exactly are they looking for?

Do they want to promote someone from within the club because they truly believe in developing local coaches?

Or is it simply a way to avoid investing in an experienced coach from outside who could bring fresh ideas, higher standards, and a different perspective?

And beyond that… how does this mindset impact coaches like us — those who have spent years preparing, studying, and working in different environments just to earn a real opportunity to show our value?

How many talented coaches are stuck waiting, not because they lack ability, but because the market prefers “cheap” over “prepared”?

I’m genuinely curious — how many times have you heard this phrase? And what do you think it really means?

There’s room for all kinds of coaches in this industry, but opportunities should be based on merit, not on cost. Hopefully, we can move toward a more balanced and respectful approach.
